WASHINGTON — The military's anticipated request for more troops to combat the insurgency in Afghanistan has divided senior advisers to President Obama as they try to determine the proper size and mission of the American effort there, officials said Thursday.
Even before the top commander in Afghanistan submits his proposal for additional forces, administration officials have begun what one called a "healthy debate" about what the priorities should be and whether more American soldiers and Marines would help achieve them.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has been vocal in favor of more troops, and while some officials said she had not shown her hand during the current deliberations, they expected her to be an advocate for a more robust force.
Does anyone seriously expect me to believe that her opinion on the military's assessment is valuable? Is this administration completely nuts?
“There is a unanimity of opinion about what our objective is, and the objective is to disable and destroy Al Qaeda and remove that threat to our national security,” said David Axelrod, the president’s senior adviser.
Axelrod, you dimwit, Al Qaeda is now in Pakistan. The Taliban is in Afghanistan. The issue is how many troops to send into Afghanistan. Somebody, please give this guy a clue.

And while they sit around and argue about something they really know nothing about our troops are dying. Either give them what they need or bring them home. Don't turn our military into a political football.

maggiemay-596099 - You are bang on. This administration needs to quit with the asinine excuses and act. Define a strategy and provide the necessary resources.

The goal of bringing democracy to afghanistan is foolish and doomed to failure. The afghan people are mostly tribal herdsmen, or at best a few generations removed from tribalism. It would take them centuries to develop a civil society capable of supporting democracy and being able to stand up to the radical islamists who threaten their lives.
america needs to build a strong military to stand up to and either destroy or control aq and the taliban. A strong pro-american tribal leader needs to take up the reigns of power. Then america can focus its energy on developing the infrastructure and economy of the afghan people.
